2026 Sports in Greater Shepparton

A jam-packed programme of 22 sports featuring the Commonwealth’s best athletes is coming to regional Victoria. Shepparton will host both men’s and women’s time trials for the cycling road race, as well as BMX racing competition.

Shepparton and Bendigo will also welcome major festivals alongside the sport program. An exciting array of events, experiences and exhibitions will tap into both region’s vibrant cultural scene.

We will update this page with specific venue locations as they are confirmed, and ticketing information when available.

The following sports will be played in the Greater Shepparton region during the Games.

Cycling – BMX

Shepparton Sports City BMX Track

BMX will be introduced to the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 2026 at Shepparton!  BMX, or bicycle motocross, is a fast paced thrilling cycle sport where riders race through a winding course with hills and jumps. BMX riders need to be incredibly physically fit and strong as the sport involves a lot of explosive power.

We like to think we are trailblazers here in Shepparton, having hosted the first regional UCI BMX Supercross World Cup and only the second in Australia back in 2020. Our world class BMX track has the only 8 metre start hill in Victoria. The track at Shepparton Sports City was built in 2009 by world renowned BMX track builder Tom Ritzenthaler who also built the Olympic track in Beijing in 2008, with the 2012 London and 2016 Rio tracks amongst other numerous World Championships.

The UCI Supercross is a world renowned premier international BMX series in the world and in order of importance the sport is only behind the Olympics and the annual World Championships. World Cups are primarily run in overseas (Europe, South America and USA and recently in towns like Madrid, Paris and Manchester) and it was a coup for a regional city like Shepparton to host two rounds of the event.

Cycling – Time Trial

Venue: TBC

This energy-sapping event pits riders against each other in a race that they cycle alone. With breakneck speed valued above everything else, prepare to be amazed by this fast-paced spectacle.

The time trial is one of the most popular events on the Commonwealth Games program, with its first appearance coming in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.  It is a race between cyclists who compete only against themselves – and the clock.

Each rider sets off at minute intervals, enabling them to focus only on achieving the fastest time possible without jostling other competitors for position. Each rider is timed individually, with the fastest rider securing the all-important place on the top step of the podium.

It’s an event that always proves to be one of the most popular at the Games, transforming regular roads into an arena for elite sport and bringing the excitement of a major sporting event to people’s doorsteps.
